TESTING METHODS

Our passion for technology combined with 25 years of dedicated service in the high end simulation industry brings you unparalleled testing and performance verification on a whole range of SurfThing computer products. Based on the highest level of industry standard testing, you'll know exactly how your computer from SurfThing will perform on your favorite software!

Testing Overview

SurfThing's streamlined computer selection allows for in depth and accurate testing on a wide range of software, giving the consumer confidence in their purchase for the desired performance level. Our objective testing takes into account verifiable performance data such as specific average frame rates, differences in screen resolution, differences in software settings, performance levels on various computer hardware specifications, and reports of improvements of software as revisions are released. For the golf simulation audience, this performance is then prepared for you in an in depth analysis giving you additional information to be aware of when deciding on a computer for your software.

Testing Software

There are a handful of metrics for testing computer performance that help guarantee consistent results and a computer that works the way you need it to. We utilize a software called Afterburner to receive the objective pure software performance results which we gather and interpret to the reader what to expect. We also use it, in conjunction with other hardware monitoring software, to make sure the system is running quiet and cool when under load for a consistent system performance and ensured long life expectancy of our products.

Frames Per Second

The FPS, or frames per second, is a measurement of how many times the computer is able to render the 3D graphics image on the screen in any given second. The more frames rendered in a second, the smoother the perceived performance. The most important number is the average FPS, as it gives a solid number for the expected overall experience. Where necessary, we may provide what is called the 1% lows. This number shows the average FPS of the most frequent performance dips. When we share this number, we may be looking to show one of two things, either how frequently the software dips in performance, causing noticeable visual stuttering, or to show you how well the software runs without these dips.

In general, having a frame rate of 30 FPS or higher is desirable to avoid noticeable frame rate jitters. To achieve the best experience, it is best to meet or exceed what is called the "refresh rate" of your display. In most simulator situations, the projector and monitors run at 60hz (meaning it refreshes its image 60 times in a second). In this situation, running at or above 60 FPS will give you the best experience possible.

Screen Resolution

We always test software for multiple screen resolutions. We do this because the screen resolution, or the number of pixels a display is using, greatly affects the performance of a software and the type of workload it puts on the graphics card of the computer. At a minimum, we test for 1080p and 4K resolutions when it comes to simulation.

PC Hardware

We use our testing history to help guide the hardware we put in our computers. Then each computer is tested vigorously to provide you with the information you need to get the exact performance you want in your simulator or gaming set up.
